Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to have experience and qualifications for working with families?

No, you do not. You will need to have a caring and enthusiastic nature, good communication skills, good listening skills and an ability to empathise with people facing difficulties. We provide training and support and are happy to help people develop new skills and build on their existing experience.

What training is provided?

The initial induction training provides a good basis of knowledge about working with families, our policies, values, expectations and addresses any concerns you may have. During the first year, you will also need to complete courses in child protection, first aid and domestic abuse awareness, all of which will be organised by Family Friends. There are also quarterly volunteer training sessions that cover specific topics, such as the importance of play, child development, mental health and attachment. These are a great way to keep informed about current issues and to meet up with other volunteers. All of our training is free.

What support will I receive?

The Volunteer Co-ordinator is available to discuss any problems, queries or concerns that you have. They also offer supervision so that you have the opportunity to reflect on your work with families, personal/professional development and celebrate your successes. The Volunteer Co-ordinator will contact you after your initial visit to each family and will keep in touch throughout the period of support.

How much time commitment is required?

Whilst you are supporting a family, the level of commitment is six sessions of two hours each (usually once a week). After six sessions, the support is reviewed in consultation with the family and may be extended. There is an expectation that volunteers will attend training sessions provided by Family Friends.

The initial application and induction processes do take time. In order to have the opportunity of working with families you will need to be available for about a year.
